John Pascal's Story

John Pascal Van Houden, a Hollander whose adventurous life took a dramatic turn at the age of 32, stands as a beacon of resilience and positive energy. Officially diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) in 2000. JP, as he’s fondly known, has channeled his indomitable spirit into giving back to the community in profound ways.

JP’s life-altering journey began in the summer of 1999 when he inhaled a cloud of pesticide meant to kill ants. Three months later, he experienced his first symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. Despite this setback, his positive drive and unwavering attitude remained intact.

JP met Christian Buhl in Gstaad, Switzerland, while skiing & snowboarding in 1987, forging a friendship that would later become the foundation for California Inclusive Sailing (CIS). As the co-founder and President of CIS, JP is on a mission to make outdoor recreation accessible to all. The organization, under his leadership, offers transformative sailing experiences that promote mental and physical well-being, aligning perfectly with JP’s philosophy of using engaging activities to relax the brain and body.

About four years ago, JP realized that taking more than eight different medications per day was slowly killing him. In a bold move, he decided to take a dramatically different approach, reducing his medicine intake to only three different pills and incorporating magic water into his regimen. This change exemplifies his innovative spirit and relentless pursuit of a healthier life.

JP tirelessly raises funds and recruits volunteers to support CIS’s mission, ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, can harness the wind, soak in the sunshine, and lift their spirits.
